I collect pre WWI world crowns and thinking about sending about 12 coins to be graded.I am trying to compare the fees PCGS vs NGC and would appreciate if someone can confirm the following. Thanks !

PCG
http://www.pcgs.com/gradinglist.html

I see two rates for standard and secure services for Regular and economy, however the note below says
* Coins Required for Secure Service: 1. All World (non-U.S.) coins except for Modern service level coins dated 1965 to date. 2. Any coin valued at $50,000 or higher.

Is this imply all non modern world coins should be pcgs secure ?

Assuming the coin value is $500 , PCGS will cost $45 per coin.

PCGS: with platinum membership (free 8 submissions with $200 membership fee)
= $200 + 4x$45
=$380

NGC
http://www.ngccoin.com/services/services.aspx
This is much simpler and world coins up to $3000 value (standard) will cost $35 per coin.

So assuming I have 12 coins to grade all over $500 then this is what each TPG will cost,

NGC: with premium membership (5 free submissions with $125 membership fee)
= $125 + 7x$35
= $370

Cost notwithstanding, I trust NGC more with those coins.

Dave for my own edification can you expand on the reasoning here. Does NGC have more expertise with these type of coins?

Seems like everyone is bashing NGC these days. I have no issues with them & have used them on several occasions along with ANACS. I have never used PCGS due to shipping costs from coast to coast but again respect their grading services.

It's kinda interesting how small the difference between the two ends up. You might want to base your decision on which TPG has graded more of the crowns you have. I currently have membership in both because of the number of raw coins that I needed certified this year -- usually I only have the NGC membership because it's easier to find the 8 reales that I collect in NGC slabs.

NGC has been grading world coins longer and they have more of an acceptance with world coins outside the US. Inside the US most collectors are still Kool-Aid drinkers and demand PCGS even if they don't know what they are doing.

As for the rates you mention I think you are reading it correctly on PCGS.

I would have mentioned this earlier but my latest submission results from PCGS were just posted this afternoon. Most of my submission were NGC crackouts so this may be relevant to which TPG you choose.

4 NGC Details => 4 PCGS Genuine (same grade category)
1 NGC Details => 1 PCGS Genuine (lower grade category)
2 NGC Not Genuine => 2 PCGS Genuine
2 NGC AU Details => 1 PCGS AU58, 1 PCGS MS62

On the whole, well worth the cost. But who knows, I might have had the same results by sending them back to NGC. As they say "your mileage may vary".

It is a generalization to claim NGC has a bigger position outside the US. Here in Australia it is overwhelmingly PCGS over NGC.
