Using PCGS photo grades as reference, I'm comparing NGC/PCGS graded Peace Silver dollars that are either in auction or for sale. I can't seem to understand how certain coins got the MS62, MS63, MS64, or MS65 grades (and other higher grades).

What is specific area that grader looks for in Peace Silver dollar to assign MS62 vs MS63 vs MS64 vs MS65 ? It is just the mint marks, etc.

Thanks.

I am by no means an expert, so I will be interested to see what a more experienced member has to say too, but from what I understand.

I don't believe that there is a specific area that is looked at when determining higher grades. But the Peace dollar series is known for notoriously weak strikes. possibly a stronger struck example would achieve a higher grade than a weaker struck example with the same scratches and dings present.

When considering high grades such as 65 and 66 eye appeal also plays a bigger part so maybe the color and location of the marks plays a part in obtaining a higher grade.

I am a newbie here. I collect Ikes.

All I can say is study study study.

As time goes along you will get better at it, on the Peace.

You might study other coins to see the differences and similarities in grading.

Good luck

Peace dollars are among the nasty coins to grade.
If you decide it's Unc then start by deciding how "baggie" it is.
The fewer marks and the more well hidden they are the higher the grade.
A MS-62 will have a lot of marks in the prime areas (cheek and field in front of Liberty).
A MS-65 will have a LOT fewer marks and they will be somewhat "hidden" in places like Liberty's hair.
