I recently acquired a certified Kronenthaler, a 1765. Mine is VF35 as graded by NGC. In comparison I would guess yours is VF25.

Thank you. Just curious , did you guess that yours would be in VF ? How much did you paid for grading ? I see NGC price 1765 VF20 for $90 and XF for $190 which should allow you to use $19 value category.

This was my first comment in the World Coin Grading forum and I must apologize because I think I have violated the spirit of this forum by offering a comment based on a TPG graded comparison.

I know most of the regulars here prefer their coins free of encapsulation. However, when I stray outside of my 8 reales comfort zone I often stick to NGC or PCGS slabbed examples.

In this case, I got the coin from a Heritage auction, already certified and I paid well more than the price guide. Outside of 1760-1789 8 reales, I just look for nice examples of 17th & 18th century world silver dollars for my collection.

Thank you for the information. I don't think you have violated any spirits :) I like my coins free of encapsulations but the quality fakes around these days is too much of a risk to me. So recently I started buying graded coins and pondering to send my first batch of raw coins to a TPG. That is why I was asking about the fees.

I agree 100% about the prevalence of restrikes and forgeries and I have done the same to protect my investment. I used the value level of grading fairly often several years ago when I was collecting 8 reales in the VF-XF range. But grading prices have gone up and now and, at least with NGC, you have to pay extra for the slab. I mainly stick to higher value coins if I buy them raw and use the standard grading tier.
