I expect a reasonably high value ebay purchase is going to go sour very quickly. It wasn't a coin but a rare Camera lens. The seller is based in France and had noted that they would be away until the 3rd of July. The lens was one I had been looking for, the price was a little cheap but I could see some markings on the lens barrel and, as it was a paypal purchase, I felt reasonably confident.
What also reassured me was a positive feedback profile of almost 350 and only 2 neutral feedbacks over the last few years( and one negative well over 12 months ago. I get back from the ANA Summer seminar and on the 4th check the purchase status....it hasn't been dispatched! I check the sellers activity and see that he/she had been leaving a raft of feedback for buyers on the 3rd (for items sold on the 18th of June). So I send an ebay message just asking for an indication of when the lens might be expected. The first message is not replied to. I send a second message on saturday...this time in French. I get a reply in English....apparently due to the sellers brain surgery that saw them in hospital til the third they won't be posting it until tomorrow and I should wait 10 days for delivery. Now years ago when I was an ebay Novice I had a sovereign purchase go wrong from a different French seller. I never got the coin and as it had been a cash payment never got a refund. Funny thing is the excuse back then was "Brain surgery!. Its sunday night I have told the seller about the previous experience and quietly mentioned if the item doesn't arrive the police will be contacted. The really annoying thing is the ridiculous excuse still has me wanting to cut the seller some slack!

I have had French colleagues who made similarly ridiculous claims to explain why they missed important meetings....one had Chicken pox four times in one year.... I really hate people who play on illness!!

Hopefully their brain surgery has improved their brain and your lens gets shipped quickly. Not sure when you purchased it, but it's only a couple days past the 4th, and it's now the weekend. Hopefully the seller will begin catching up on business this week. I wouldn't get too frustrated yet. I'd definitely give them the benefit of the doubt at this point. I think ebay will give them 2 weeks to deliver before they even allow a case to be opened.....at least that's the way it is here. I know it sounds like 'deja-vu' all over again...sorry for the French funny....but be patient. Easier said than done I know. I tend to be very impatent. Give them a little time.

Edweather. Yeah your right but it is still really annoying : meaning the claim of brain surgery. The seller is a professional seller. what person( in a social welfare state) would place listings on ebay when they were heading off to hospital for brain surgery. the chances of not being able to complete a sale would be high in such a scenario. Likewise what person would be able to place ebay listings when preparing for such an operation? Normally people are so concerned about the upcoming operation continuing the business is the last thing on their mind. If I had not have had similar experiences with French colleagues in real life I might have tended to believe the person.....it seems the French would prefer to tell a tale of personal catastrophe than simply resort to the truth. I will wait but I will be referring to the brain surgery in the feedback. Heres the actual wording the seller used:

Quote:
It should take 10 days to come to you. Shipment will be made tomorrow. I was out at the hospital the last ten days for a brain surgery.

I've gotten the surgery/hospital excuse many times, but never brain surgery. I don't get it. How often does the typical person have a hospital stay?

Maybe Google translate said brain surgery when the seller was trying to say they had a headache...
