Hi, a friend had this in his collection from childhood, mentioned that he never liked this particular coin, so we set it aside momentarily. I picked it up after looking at the majority of the rest of his collection, and noticed something over the words "it must", I assumed it would be the word "copy" or "replica" and he looked at it long enough to see that it was the word "preserved". After photographing it, which made details much easier to see, we were able to determine that it is a pretty full, nearly 180 degree rotation, double strike.... Also, the opposite side appears to have been struck twice, as the edge work on 1/2 the coin is doubled, and there are partial letters in the leaves to the left, and other things hard to describe.
Does anyone have any advice on how to go about determining the rarity of this coin? We identified (we think) the die numbers, and they seem to both be R1 dies, but the error is super cool, and we are both very excited to have discovered it, regardless of it's rarity or value.... as long as it's not some copy or replica gone wrong. Personally, I am in favor of sending it of to PCGS or NGC to be graded and slabbed, because even if it's not truly worth the cost, it's likely to be the oldest, coolest thing either of us will ever find.... opinions?
