Uhm, well, yes the 1879 Morgans were likely kept in vaults until being released into circulation, where someone probably kept one preserved over the years.

Cool thank you for the info, my next morgan will have to be a circulated one, but they are sooo expensive to get to south africa....

Likely stored in government vaults for 70+ plus years after it was minted. When silver dollars became hot in the 1950s and 1960s, the vaults were tapped for $1,000 bags which were released to banks, dealers, anyone who wanted them. I'm sure there are still rolls of silver dollars that were rolled up during this time floating around. However, most have likely been broken open and picked through for the high grade coins.

This deals with the last releases through the GSA, but gives you an idea of how vast the government's holdings were over the years. Your 1879 was likely paid out at face value sometime during the 20th century. It had become a tradition for the treasury to break out bags of fresh Morgans before Christmas so that they could be given as gifts to children.

Nope did not use e bay used a bullion dealer he imported 1000 oz of bullion so he got this one for me
