Ok.... bear with me here . At first I thought this quarter was just sanded down, or caught in a coin counter, or whatever. But then I thought, why is the clad still there? And, if it was sanded smooth, or whatever, shouldn't that edge of the coin be thinner than the other edges? So I got out my trusty digital calipers and measured both rims and all around the coin. All the edges measured 1.4mm, including where it appears sanded down.

In other words, although it looks as if one side of the reverse is sanded down, it's not any thinner than any other side, and it is clad like the rest of the coin with no copper showing through. Is this an error or am I just being silly?

Thanks,

Rick

You actually got it in your description. It is not an error. Someone held it up to a sanding wheel or some kind of grinding wheel.

Thanks,
Bill

Yeah, you guys are right.....

I did a little "experimental archaeology" and ground down the reverse of a different 1994 quarter..... the results match.

I had no idea that the clad was so thick.... that's what threw me off....

Thanks for the info!

I was able to sand this quarter down a lot before the copper started to peek through. Did it about 6 months ago when a similar thing was being discussed on another forum.
