Sold some of my coins today for the first time. Why did I have to sign my name when selling coins for the police?

to the CCF!

I would guess it is either Mass. State Law or a specific law for the city of Boston. The dealer likely has to hold his purchase for a pre determined amount of time. This time allows the authorities a chance to ensure that the bought coins were not stolen. I would not sweat it, this is standard operating procedure in many locales.

Coins are common stolen item to fence, as you might imagine. Most pawn shops have you do the same thing for almost any item of value. It just keeps a database they can reference when stolen items are reported.

lol....but...Do not think he was bragging....

I was obligated to attach a copy of picture I.D. to every transaction, regardless whether it was the first interaction or one thousandth with a customer....in one county.

In a shop in a neighboring county there was no obligation (even though I did) to even check I.D. These type of laws are very localized (in NY).

Every time the police were involved the shop lost....unfortunately the onus of buying stolen property falls onto the business...there was recourse.....have you ever sued any one (a thief) that does not own anything?

These laws are a necessary evil in todays world.....imo....

No ID needed to sell in Oregon, at least in my limited experience.

I completely agree. Theives and counterfeiters would be almost impossible to track down without a database of transactions of some sort.

Unless you are doing something illegal, or trying to hide something, I wouldn't worry about it.

Just feel bad for the dealers in some jurisdictions that can't sell the stuff they buy for 30 days because of a holding period.

I have not been asked for an ID to sell at my LCS, but they know me very well.
