Hello!

Me= TOTAL newb to coin collecting.

I came across the nickel in the photos below last week- general circulation from change back on a retail purchase, and noticed immediately that it was different; extremely smooth on most of the obverse side.
The reverse is fairly normal in appearance, aside from some slight discoloration, though again, I'm VERY new to this.

I understand it's difficult to tell simply by looking at photos, but I'm hoping someone may have come across something similar, and may be able to offer an error "classification" theory.

Is this a probable PMD situation, or does it appear to be perhaps a grease struck die error?

While the minting location appears to indicate 'D', there is no discernible date, so I'm not sure the year.

Should there be other things I should look for to help 'classify'? Is this just a cool, kinda creepy with the missing face, deeper shadows, and mere suggestion of eyes, coin- or might there be some additional value placed upon it?

Thank you everyone in advance for any insight and/ or suggestions you might be able to provide!!

Katie

PMD. Someone purposely sanded the obverse down.

Oh, and by the way,

Thanks so much wheatchaser140!

I am still continually amazed by how some people choose to spend their free time- BUT, to each, his own. At least I get a slightly creepy nickel to pass along to my nephew out of it.

Thanks again for the help- very much appreciated!
