Can someone give me an approximate grade on this Capped Bust half? It looks like the small date and letter variety, but I could be wrong. The coin weighs 13.51 grams and has full cartwheel luster on both the obverse and reverse.

The 1 and 8 show signs of doubling at the bottom of each number and the area around the date and 50 C show raised polish lines and die gouges. Is this a RPD?

The rim letters are full with each word of " FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR * " in a small rectangular impression. Between each word are very light marks that look almost like reeding, but can't be seen without a loupe.

Thanks for any information!

I had a detailed answer, but my browser auto-refreshed, so I lost it. Abbreviated version:
Details: AU
Cleaned: Possibly
Signs of cleaning: vertical striations and haze around devices
Other factors: scratched around date

Variety: check the link below and scroll down to 1834. Compare your coin to each of the listed varieties. Or wait for an expert here

Thanks for the info! This will help me identify the type on my own. I'm an error and variety collector, but most of the coins I deal with aren't this old.

I deal with lots of VAMs, but I didn't know how to look up the Overton numbers. I'm not sure, but the photos that seem to match the doubling on the 18 make me think my coin is the Overton 114. I'm sure I'll get better with time.

I've got several coins I want to have graded, but I haven't had the time or money. I'll be working on getting them done soon.

Thanks again!

You really have a good eye for spotting Die Varieties(without the book). I agree with the O-114.
