I found this 1944 Wheat cent in an unsearched roll with an interesting indentation on both sides at the same location and am wondering if it is a known error type? It sure looks like whatever happened has the same patina as the coin.

I also have a Mercury dime with a rim indentation on both sides. I am new to error hunting and advice on these to coins is greatly appreciated!

I am not a expert and I am sure some who are will chime in.

the first one looks like PMD post mint damage from being squeezed if the damage lines up on both side or hit.

the second is either PMD from wear or tear or dyer coin or It could also possibly be the the Blakesley Effect on a coin with no clip...where a weak strike or diminished rim it is a noticeable difference caused by the clip.

The first is post-strike damage. It took a hit and some surface medal was displaced.

The second appears to be a genuine clip though it is so worn, we may never be able to determine that for sure. Could you get some more close-ups of the area in question. The tapering of the design rim is correct but what I would be looking for is metal flow along the clip itself. It is impossible to have the Blakesley Effect without a clip, or pre-upset blank distortion.

the Lincoln Cent is almost certainly damage. the dime looks like a clipped planchet - although it it is - is is really quite minor. still the dime is a nice coin. lots of "character"...

Thanks so much for your help. I've already learned a bunch. Looks like I need to invest in a good macro camera, a nice big magnifying glass and alot of reading forum posts here at CCF.

From the aspects you have pointed out I'm leaning towards PMD because of how the edge ridges taper off. My guess is that the Blakesley Effect results in a quick transition from edge ridges to clip.

The dime looks like an incomplete planchet. Nice find. Although minor, on an older dime there should be a premium for your coin. Definite keeper!
