One of the nicest collections I have seen came into the local coin shop today.

Many very nice coins, most were re-sold immediately.
Had a proof Seated dollar, half dollar, quarter and Half Dime
Also a 1864 proof Indian Head cent and a few proof Morgan's.

A 1869 pattern 50 cent, 1907 and 1908 St Gaudens. A complete
1995 W proof eagle set and many more.

There were also about 25 Carson city Morgan's, slabs and GSA boxes.

Since I have been telling myself I need to be buying better coins
I went ahead and bought one of the 1885's.

Any opinions

I saw in one of the boxes this coin book and ask if they wanted to sell it .. the guy gave it to me before he left the shop. Made me very happy.

What would cause someone to sell what's that kind of quality coins, I wonder?

Very nice Morgan by the way - MS-64 PL/DMPL no doubt.

The owner of the coins passed away, a brother and cousin flew in from Europe to settle his estate.

Ms. Williams and the eagle must both be freezing, being that frosty. I'm guessing you're aware of what you've got here, and I offer my sincere jealousy regarding your acquisition. Not_very_common for an 1885-CC, and this is as liquid a coin as anyone could own.

Since I help out at the coin shop, and help sort, grade and price this collection. They let me purchase this coin at below greysheet ... $650.

I really am happy to get the book too .. I have been wanting to get this Breen's book for a long time.

Rest in Peace

Very nice! I see this as MS-64 PL from the photos. How do the fields look in hand? PL and DMPL are tough calls from static photos.

In hand the fields have a nice mirror appearance, both obverse and reverse.

I think it was a post on CCF .. where one member said he would buy all the 1885 CC's he could .. that stuck in my head.

There were a few coins in that collection that I would have liked to have .. some were to high priced, for what I wanted to spend today.

Some were not to bad, there was a
1899 Lafayette dollar MS-63 or 64.
1900 O/CC MS 64
a Spitting eagle Morgan .. I think it was a 1891 CC

But I am very happy getting this 1885 CC ...

that is a stunning 1885-CC GR58

You also scored on the free book--at the cheapest online is around $98 and several copies offered are over $100.

I have wanted a nice 85 and boy did Zyou land a nice one. I'd bet in twenty years from now You'd easily get 10x what You paid. I am so jealous. That looks like a $1000 coin all day long.

Seeing this frosted 85cc takes me back almost 10 years. I wish I could find the post of the coin on the NGC forum because it looks just like yours.
Your LCS must really appreciate your service.
