Ok, so I had another thread on this coin in the grading section, but I was so thrilled with this coin, that I decided it needed to replace my 7070 type example. Lots of folks graded it AU, but I'm convinced its MS. What makes this one so neat to me is the chameleon-ness about it. Viewing head on, it looks like a normal brown lustrous unc IHC, with maybe some slight blueish toning. Viewed at an angle, it turns into a colorful spectrum of blue-purple iridescent euphoria. Is it AT, I doubt it, but even if it is, they did a heck of a job retaining cartwheel luster and making such a neat spectrum of changing color based on the angle.

Here are some photos in direct light, where it appears to be a lightly toned brown IHC.

This is the kind of look that I LOVE on old copper. Nicely lustrous brown, with beautiful colorful cartwheels when viewed at the right angle!!

I'm not sure about that toning...? What causes that?

I think the important thing is that you like the coin, whether it is AT or natural toing. Personally, I think the coin is very attractive.

The tone and attractiveness of the coin depends on the individual collector. beaglebailey is so correct. It's all about what you want in your collection, grading be damned.

I am not an expert in determining AT, but I have had some experience. The more brilliant toning hangs around the edges of the devices, and this is one way it naturally forms...as I have seen others like this in slabs. Most of the time, the coin looks more like it does in the top 4 pictures...primarily brown with some light color toning...it is only when you get it in the right lighting/angle that the strong iridescent toning really comes alive.

My coin is far from the most dramatically naturally toned indian. I liked mine especially for the chameleon affect, that it goes from brown to blue depending on the angle. If you want to see some more dramatically toned Indians, look on coinfacts, they always display incredible iridescent toned coins. here are some examples from ebay.

And here are some naturally toned absolute MONSTERS that blow mine away! These are way too outlandish for me, but I can see how it would appeal to some

So as you can see, this type of toning can acquire naturally, and be much more extreme than what I have on my coin.

absolutely love the toning on that 1906!
if only I could afford something like that..

IMHO the blue color makes these IHC's so much more attractive
