I saw one in a coin shop a few weeks ago and it caught my eye because it had a very obvious die crack on the obverse (I think it was near the AM in America). When I asked the guy at the counter about the Morgan he agreed that he thought it was a die crack, and I was planning to buy it, until I realized how much they asked for it ($399, or maybe it was $299), so I had to pass, since I didn't plan to spend that much money that day. To my surprise I looked up the coin and it has a mintage of 4.4M and that is a going price for it. Even more interesting is I don't think they commanded a premium for the die crack either (I assume it was a VAM). Do any of you have an explanation as to why the price is so high? I haven't had much luck on this online, and I know you guys must know!

1903-O is a semi-key in the series. 4.4million is pretty low for a morgan and approximately 10% of the original mintage is thought to survive today.

If the coin was VG-10 it was worth the $299 and if it was better than AU-50 it was worth the $399. They start out expensive but don't really gain value like other morgans do with grade. This can also be seen with many other dates such as the 1899-P.

It's all about supply and demand, price depends on the difference between supply and demand. It's calculated based on a inverse graph where Supply is the Y-axis and demand is the x-axis and the resulting line is the price.

The 1903-O was once terribly rare and really expensive, until substantial quantities in storage came to light in 1962. They nevertheless remain moderately scarce, with some speculation that there are yet bags of them that continue to be hoarded.
