NOT a VG-10... Around G-4/G-06. Here's PCGS Photograde for comparison:

Looks as if you've got the grade nailed, for whatever difference it makes to its value.

G-04. The lettering touches the rims on the reverse which makes it no higher than a 4.

I have collected Barber half dollars for some time now. Two simple things should be kept in your mind for a VG-10. E PLURIBUS UNUM Should be complete although some aspects may be weak. LI & Y Should be complete an bold.

And to add the only exception to those rules are 1909 half dollars. LIBERTY will show near F15 details on even VG8 coins.

Not a series I collect, so the grading tips are welcome. The PCGS guidelines as outlined in Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection aren't quite as definitive as what's been articulated here, so my initial assessment was a case of "winging it" so to speak.

with G-4, but that's still a cool find! One of the last New Orleans Barber halves!

I'm at 4 too. A bit too much to pay imho, but at least it doesn't appear to be a cleaned cull or something.

Quote: A bit too much to pay imho There was a series of lots consisting of Barber halves in this type of packaging, all similrly low grade specimens, just different years, and the bidding on each was stalling out at $12.50, so as I said, on the spur of the moment I decided to jump in and take one. I realize that in G condition, or even if it was VG, it's basically junk silver and essentially worth only melt, but I kind of liked this particular display card that talks about the Great White Fleet.

I should have added in my original posts:
Yes you were off on grade, but a 12.50 gamble on that coin isn't horrible. If you paid $500 on a $250 coin it would be a different story. Considering all of the beat and cleaned barbers in low grade out there, you really didn't miss the mark that much. Chalk it up to a numismatic education and rock on.
