Not sure what to make of this... Only one side affected. I read somewhere that cloth can sometimes get between the die and the quarter?...

That's interesting...is that texture in the metal, and not just surface contamination? Hard to tell from pics.
PS: if you change the subject heading to read "struck through cloth" it might get more hits.

It looks like all the design of the obverse is there. If it was struck through cloth, parts would be missing or partially missing.

I wonder if it had been glued to a ribbon and given as a gift to celebrate California

It looks like burlap or some kind of bag toning to me.

Yeah...clear glue might be a possibility, it can look like metal on a coin.

Thanks! I agree, it may have been adhered somehow to a display of some kind showing the California side of the coin...

Try soaking it in some acetone and see what happens?

To me..it looks like this quarter fell onto the carpet of a car with perhaps some spilt soda pop (wet spot) and it sat for quite some time... Eventually getting stuck to the carpet of the vehicle looks like post mint soda pop damage!! Pmsd!! Hahaha I do laugh at myself!!
