I mentioned in another thread that I was at a rural coin auction yesterday where a "collection" was being sold off. Well over a hundred lots, many of which consisted of very modern or low grade older coins, and even plated reproductions, encased or enhanced as "collectibles" - quasi-sets conforming to themes like "Nine Decades of Linclon Pennies", "Dawn of the Century Coins", "The Vanishing American Indian", "A Century of Women on US coins", et cetera - the kind of stuff hawked to the public on TV shopping shows, where presentation and smooth talk are everything. I ended up with one of these (see below), unavoidably since it was bundled up in a lot with a Peace dollar I wanted. However, since I limited my bid and paid only what the dollar was worth to me, I basically to my way of thinking got this for free, although I have no idea what I'll do with it. There was a fellow there snapping up almost all of this kind of material, certainly well below the original selling prices, but still I'm hard pressed to see the potential for a ready return on his investment. I feel more sorry for the numismatically unsophisticated folks who get sucked into buying this sort of stuff at full retail in the first place, for as prettily packaged as they might be, such sets are a losing proposition, even in the long term. I wouldn't pay more than a dollar each for those. I don't like altered coins.

Is that a Littleton product? They're always coming up with gimmicky, overpriced stuff with hardly any numismatic value... And yet people still buy it. Smh...

Numismatically speaking, they aren't generally worth more then a quarter but people collect EVERYTHING. IF he was paying a bit over 1.25 ill bet he can make some money. People love to collect things from their home state.

Quote: Is that a Littleton product? Don't know, doesn't say on it. There's a hokey "Vault Verification #" sticker on the back with a stock number that hasn't helped me identify who put it out or sold it.... Quote: I'd pay a few bucks for a Texas set lol Quote: If I liked the Ohio quarter better, I'd spend a couple bucks just to have it as a novelty Yeah, that's the thing, if it were a state in which I was born, grew up, or live now, then at least I'd keep it as a trinket, or maybe give it as a gift. As it is, the face value covers the buyer's premium on the Peace dollar. At the auction, a few of these things went for just a bit more than face value, but most sold for a significant multiple of that.

I like how it says "The complete State Quarter Collection" when all it has are 5 quarters for Washington state.

Quote: There's a hokey "Vault Verification #" sticker on the back "Vault Verification" sounds to me like National Collectors Mint. They are really big on having things come out of the vault etc. Quote:I like how it says "The complete State Quarter Collection" when all it has are 5 quarters for Washington state. That's because it is only one holder from the "collection" Now he just needs the other 49 holders.

I might be willing to trade a collectible painted president dollar for that set of quarters.

Quote: I feel more sorry for the numismatically unsophisticated folks who get sucked into buying this sort of stuff they aren't getting sucked in... any more than the guy who collects matchbox cars, beanie babies, or anything else "collectable". here's a mind blowing theory ... maybe they like what they collect (even if we don't). as long as there is more than one person who buys this stuff there will always be a market, and potential for profit.

I think that is true of small portion of the people. But if you watch the QVC or commercials advertising this stuff, then use very deceptive tactics to encourage people into thinking that they are making an investment.
There's another thread with a link to the infomercial for gold plated replicas of $50 Gold Buffaloes, and they show all these graphs of how the value of the actual gold Buffaloes have risen in price 100% over the past few years.
