vermontensium, I agree with your assessment. Coin's surfaces are slightly rough....maybe ground recovery? Details AU+. Coin is not as white as it appears in the photos, more of a light grey color. Certainly NOT stained. If cleaned, it was minor as there are no hairlines. I believe a TPG will give it an AU details with some problem notation. Environmental damage is probably a good catch-all CYA for this coin. I can see why the previous owner cracked the coin out and tried for a better grade. ANACS might give it an AU-58 details, but, I think I'll go with NGC again and hope for an NGC AU-50, but, I believe they'll go with AU details. PS: Not much luster left, unfortunately

Quote: I think I'll go with NGC again and hope for an NGC AU-50, but, I believe they'll go with AU details. I'd almost guarantee it. Most high dollar coins are photographed by the TPG's when they come in , whether or not the client asks them to be, this way they don't upgrade as many coins anymore from crack outs. I'd bet NGC will catch that this one has been in one of their holders before, I can't imagine it would get pass them easily. These aren't exactly like 1881-S Morgan dollars, which come in by the hundreds.

This would be in the hundreds of thousands if it makes a solid AU, right?
Well... Fantastic coin. Congratulations.

OK, the suspense is over (for me)..............just came back from NGC today, NGC AU details-cleaned. Looks like everyone here was correct. I don't think it was cleaned, but, there is something just a bit off that it could not warrant a straight grade. Am I happy.....heck YES. I venture a value of $20,000 - $30,000, maybe more. I have to bet the guy that sold it in it's XF env. damage holder is not too happy.

Bit off? Not anomalous, 105 year in buried box wont leave unscathed almost anywhere. Yet 4 weeks conservancy and new wings, tho small reminders nitpick. Decided bargain at 18, hornswoggle at 13.6, outright larceny at 9.3 (GJ!) Missed it. Would have brought it back home between 9-13? Wdyt. Funny (sad for last seller) that numero uno (the unmentionable) put death knell on value perception. Care to send photo of newly holdered? Like others loosed, coins originally interred next seraphim, and next deemed junk, each will see a rebirth, each gain another yesterday
