There's a thread running on CU Forums about this coin. It's in a PCGS holder now correct? Consensus over there is you got a rip as it sold for double last night's closing price just 3 years ago! In case you hadn't seen it: http://coins.ha.com/itm/early-dimes.../1158-7071.sCongrats on finding a good buy!

Nice coin, if I had $10k to drop, I would have bid you up.

BH1964, you are CORRECT. I was salivating on this coin all week. Not sure why the previous owner cracked it out and why he didn't just send it back to NGC before selling it. It's the most I've ever spent on a coin, but, I just couldn't let it pass.

A truly scarce coin, and one I would love to own. You got it for a great price, from what it seems. Enjoy it!

Do you know if NGC was asked if they could conserve the coin (remove the stain)?

Looks like a slight rusty die. Stained? What term will they use next?
Beautiful coin!

Stained does seem like an odd description for this coin. I should receive the coin by Wednesday so I can inspect it better.

Quote: Stained does seem like an odd description for this coin. I should receive the coin by Wednesday so I can inspect it better. The current description on the PCGS holder is XF Details Environmental Damage so it's likely someone tried to remove the stain (and did) but then got another problem holder AND a downgrade to XF! My 2 cents on the GC images - the problems appear minor and there is a chance to get this coin into a problem-free holder at some point. At the value level it would be worth several submissions to PCGS, NGC, ANACS to get a problem-free grade. The guy that paid 18 grand when it was in the NGC AU Details Stained holder was probably hoping the same thing. Good luck!

Now that I see the coin as you see it, I'm ruling out die rust for sure. Parts of the coin are weakly struck, and details are definitely AU+ but not sure if surfaces are original. Appears dipped..maybe. How is the luster in hand..strong?
PCGS and NGC are both wrong. Environmental Damage? Stained? I don't think so. An incredible coin in any collection! Congratulations!
