The mint melted hundreds of millions of them in the 1920s and 1930s and I imagine people melted millions more in the 1980s when the price of silver shot up. So to answer your question, no one really knows.

Compiling the individual issue estimates suggests a total of around one and a quarter million are extant in grade MS65 or better. That probably represents at best 1% of all that remain, so if you do the math, there're still quite a few that've survived in all grades. Certainly here in the U.S., every coin shop and show vendor has plenty for sale all the time.

Not really. They still can be had for the melt value of the silver and the common dates in decent condition are readily available for a small premium over spot.

This would tell me there are still many millions available. You can usually trust the coin-collecting community to adjust prices accordingly based on market availability.

The unique circumstances surrounding the Morgan dollar are unprecedented in coin collecting. Congress directed the minting of 100's of millions of these coins with very little demand from the market. It was to find a use for the Comstock Load silver. The consumer wasn't eager to have these loading down their pockets so the banks kept 1000 coin bags in storage. Fast forward to 1963 and silver to be removed from coinage the following year ... the banks and federal reserve could now unload all of these bags easily. This is why you see so many high grade examples of most dates.
