I have a few coins I'd like a little more protection than a 2x2 cardboard. Can you recommend some slabs or similar type protector that I can add to my own coins? Something safe for long term storage, obviously.

I saw some square Harris ones at hobby lobby, which is like 1/2 mile from my house - has anyone tried those?

I haven't tried those but if you look on the web you will find holders called 'Air tights'. There are different makers and they offer greater protection the a standard 2 x 2.

Hope this helps.

If you're looking for a 'slab' I use World Premier Coin Slabs from amosadvantage.com. Great value and a nice way to store your coins.

Well I got impatient and got the H.E. Harris ones at Hobby Lobby. I'm not terribly impressed, but they were only about 3.50 for 6 with the perpetual 40% off coupon.

Any-Recommended-Self-Slabs?

To my surprise and disappointment the gold insert is not removable so you have a somewhat tacky "half dollar" label in big letters on the front forever. There is also a tiny little bit of movement with the insert after it is sealed (although the coin is recessed and will not be damaged by it). Just enough to give you a feeling of lesser quality.

Next time I will try the slabs recommended by srs77 as those look like what I really wanted. I will still use these, but they are definitely not anywhere near the NGC slabs in quality. I guess they are a big step up from the 2x2 stapled ones, though, which was my goal, and only about 60 cents each.

I've been pleased with the Intercept holders, though not as big as a slab, they offer more protection than any flip or 2x2 mylars, plus they inhibit corrosion (always a good thing) especially on copper and bronze coins.

They also have them in Lighthouse Quadram holders. I've always purchased them when I see them on a deal at ebay, sometimes they can go cheap, I picked up 30 new holders for my 2¢ for $22.00 shipped a few months ago, that saved me about $8.00 over wizards price shipped.

For the slab sized holders I do like the Coin World holders, as they are like the old school ANACS white holders (my favorite sized slabs) as they don't take up so much room, but when using safes or safe deposit boxes it seems space is always at a premium.

Lighthouse also makes some, more along the size/look of NGC holders, both the Lighthouse and CoinWorld slab cases cost just over $1/each.
