Went to an auction today with some very high quality coins. One of which was a 1832 Bust Half in AU condition that had been plugged. My question is how do you put a value on this type of coin. Obviously it is not worth it's full value, but how much would you try and discount it? And, no I did not buy it. It went for $110 with buyers premium.

It depends on how well the plug job was done? $110 seems a bit high for any problem 1832.

It depends somewhat on how distracting it is. As a general rule, I don't like plugged coins at all and pass on them. IMHO, as a damaged and repaired coin it loses >70% of its value and has little chance to appreciate in value (hole filler). So I am pretty harsh.

I'm sure you've heard the old expression "NOT WORTH A PLUGGED NICKEL".....

I have to say that it depends on how well the plugging was done. How distracting is it? What do the rest of the details look like? The other thing to consider is that, if it has a hole, it was probably used as jewelry or something similar and has probably been cleaned as well. I would deduct at least 50% of book value for a plugged coin, possibly more depending upon the overall appearance of the coin.

Thx , guys. My gut feel was the same as yours. Man, though, it was a beaut except for the plug.
