I stayed the weekend with some family in town. My uncle said..."oh I have some coins....they aren't worth anything though." He proceeds to show me a box that included: 1 roll of UNC all beautifully toned 1884-O Morgans 3 rolls of UNC ASE's 30-40 Proof ASE's '86-'03 30-40 Silver Proof sets 2 1/4 ounce gold bullion pieces various random silver bullion and coins my uncle was a bloody liar! I give a rough estimate of his collection to be around $5000 and he claims he has 4 bags of every State Quarter and a few hundred more coins at his office. Least he gave me a GW silver half comm out of the 4 he had.

Did he really not think he had anything good? Or was he just saying that to get a reaction out of you?

Not worth much is a very 'relative' term what is worth a fortune to you or me may not be to your uncle.. Tell him you will buy the ASE's off him for face value :-)

Oh he knows what he has....and he doesn't think it's a big deal. He knows it's more of an investment then anything else. The funny thing is his wife and kids have no clue about all these and what they are actually worth
What's cool though is that if he Does sell it....I get first dibs

A similar thing happened to me when my neighbor told me to go over to his house and look at some coins he had. In rolls of pennies that he had I found 2 1909-S VDB and a bunch of other key and semi-key lincolns, and quite a few indian head and Liberty Half Eagles. I also found a bunch of other valuable coins.

If you think about it though, it makes sense. A lot of people in the older generation have saved coins that were common place when they were younger. I'm thinking that the young generation now may have the same thing happen. If in 2009 they change the penny then maybe one day memorial pennies will be the new wheaties.

I wonder how many years it will take for the old Jeffersons to become scarce.
