I figure most of these coins are pretty much shot anyway but, if possible, I'd like to read the dates or at least make them look decent. What would you suggest using on them (I don't have acetone or alcohol)?

Ugly Pennies:

Green Penny (needed for book):

Ugly dimes (maybe silver?):

As bad as those are, why not just regular soap and water as a good first step?

I would try soaking them in distilled water over night.

Arthrene,

I have to agree with Vaslin. Get out a shovel and waste no more time on these. I recognize them as metal detector finds. Nothing will clean up the memorial cents. The rosy's will still work in a vending machine.

Arthrene, unless you just want to play around and experiment with cleaning these puppies I wouldn't worry about them. The Lincolns are memorials so they wouldn't even be worth the effort even if there was a way to restore them to a decent looking state. Can't tell about the dimes but if they aren't silver I wouldn't bother with them either. In fact I doubt if I'd bother doing anything even if they were silver. I'd just lump them in with some other junk silver and when I find enough put them on ebay and hope to get melt or so out of them.

Actually great coins to experiment with. This would be good if you ever acquired a decent coin and wanted to clean it regardless of how many times people say don't do that. As for experimenting on thoes really poor coins here is some of the things I've suggested to many others over the years and have tried all of them. You do not need to go out and buy anthing. You should have or a neighbor or relative should have any of these.
To start with using a glass type container like a coffee pot place those coins in there with distilled water. Now put them on the hot plate section of a coffee maker, allow to get warm, remove, place on a cotton towel to see if any results.
If no results try Lemon Juice or Lime Juice. Place coins on a glass dish, pour the juice on them, allow to soak for a while, remove, rinse with distilled water.
You may also try items like Vinegar, Olive Oils, tomato juice, cooking oils and just about anything else laying around in your kitchen. Just remember to always rinse completely with distilled water. For more extreme attempts go out to your car, relatives car, neighbors car and with a turkey type baster, remove some battery acid from their battery. Pour into a glass dish, add your coins, remove, rinse.
The thing to always remember is not to use metalic containers to do any of the experiments. You must know about dissimilar matalic reations of course.

If you're really determined I've seen posts where people have used taco bell hotsauce with supposedly good results.

And then my buddy I mentioned in another thread did really well with toothpaste and a bit of elbow grease on a silver coin. heheheheh

Here you go! Place your coins in the bottom of a glass of Coke overnight.

A rock tumbler with pecan shells does the trick for me on this type of Find. For the Really corroded Lincs you might want to add some sand.

On dark Coins you might try circulating them in your pocket with other coins. It tends to make an antique effect on the details. But this is only with coins that have no value for collect ability. You just have to remember not to spend them.
