According to this article anyway, there's still a lot of pennies unaccounted for.

I have actually been getting more an more from my pick up banks, and I seem to be finding more banks willing to give them to me. Over the past 2 weeks, I have picked up over 10 boxes of Pennys. so much so that I am not able to go through them before I get more. I would rather have them sitting in my house waiting for me to go through than for the Banks to send them off.

The thought that in the 4 billion that have already been scrapped that there might be some 20's or 30's in there drives me insane. Just imagine if there was a 36 dot?

I think they will only recover a small percentage of the 31 billion.

Most pennies are either in people's penny jar hoards or lost forever.

Im still able to pick up pennies from one branch. I made friends with the teller so she gives them to me :)

Last batch I picked up must have come from an elderly household...because each roll was full of 1978,77,76 UNC pennies and a ton of pre 60s and 50s. very cool

Don't forget the Canadian pennies in US penny jars.

The little maple leaf might be a dying breed but the alloy recovery program will NEVER get their paws on MY Canadian cents

if there was a 36 dot in the pennies that have been melted then that's my own country's loss and a complete shame. When I was in Kelowna I went to a BMO and they didn't let me get any pennies. I live in Fleetwood in Surrey, any bank iv tried in north surrey have said the same thing which would be that there not allowed to give them anymore, I even tried one in White rock. I'm getting jealous to the point where my parents might need to lock me up in a room until I loose the interest but I'm not happy, I'm just happy that you guys are able to save what you can while I watch. Maybe the tellers just don't like me. it seems that they have a long way to go before there all gone, everybody still seems to have some amount of them and they wont for long.

I probably have 4-5 Canadian pennies in my collect or stored somewhere. So the number should be 30,999,999,995 pennies

They can get their copper pennies back from me when they pay me what they're worth. Same deal with nickel nickels.

If the mint wants my copper pennies, they can buy them from me at 2.5 cents each. :)

I have around 200 boxes to go through still. I am not finding banks that are willing to give them out anymore.

Curious - total minted was 35B.
Total estimated in circulation in 2012 was only 6B.
Total recovered in 2013 was 4B.
Total remaining 'in circulation' is 2B.

So what happened to the other 29B coins (35-6)? Was there a massive recovery program before 2012? Sure some wore out or were lost or damaged but 29B?

Some of you must really be hoarding them eh?

WOW...I thought I had a bunch. Some of these numbers are staggering. I've emptied the banks in Central Washington south of Osoyoos. I find only about 5-10 per box now. I've resorted to buying bags and rolls from small shops if I can get 'em for the right price.
