I should have posted this earlier but didn't for some reason. R.W. Julian has written a series of articles covering coinage from 1776 to 1792 in Numismatic News. I found them well written and fascinating.

Thanks for the heads up, I quit subscribing to NN a few years ago, but will have to track down these articles to read. J.W. Julian has always been an author I like to read, he is also quite the researcher on historical data and great at uncovering facts about our coinage history.
