I was wondering what your thoughts are on this coin. The raised portions, such as the motto, etc.. have no toning, while the flat surfaces and field have lots of toning. There is pullaway on various parts of the coin too.

All in all, the color of the coin is like a green that crawled out of a gold color, or vice versa, but it is predominantly matte.

When I did my research, almost aLL of the AT coins had toning over the lettering, motto, and anythiing in its way. This one seems different. The SAD thing is that this coin's surface is AMAZING, and I wonder if this WOULD have been a Proof Like coin at one point, based on 16X magnification. There are some occasional rough patches, and in fact, these are the areas where there exists the LEAST toning.

The color appears natural, not just a covering on top of the coin surface, but almost ingrained into the coin, with some matte, some glossier.

Any thoughts?

Here is the coin next to a normal non-toned coin, for reference...

Maybe these photos taken outside this morning are better?

mailman28, I am about 85-90% certain it is, based on pullaway, toning conditions, and the provenance from the grandpa by which it came into my possession. He stored it in the 1940's equivelant of a plastic baggy, which was not sealed, but had several morgans in the same bag, Then, this bag was loosely laid in an old paper grocery bag tightly.

Not a manilla envelope, but I wonder if the grocery bag contains the sulfur compounds that replicate that of a manilla envelope...

some closer-up photos taken outside....

not the prettiest toner, but pretty dang cool, considering it is my first really toned morgan...

..And the whole coin has a "Gold on top of Green" hue to it, natural in appearance. Some areas are dull and matter, while portions of the field appear to conceal an almost proof-like surface quality. This is not PL, but it would have been nice to have seen the actual coin prior to the toning that has developed over 100+ years...

Hate to play devil's advocate but who would tone a coin THAT color? It's got to be NT.

I agree! Keep in mind, the first picture is more of what it looks like "straight on", and the lower photo depicts what it looks like at an angle, in the sun.

Straight on, it had a pretty cool green/gold overlay. But yeah, it is not gonna win a beauty contest.

The REAL trick is, do I submit it for conservation, or do I somehow stow it away, in hopes that the base toning evolves into something that is actually appealing?
