Here are images of a coin that recently sold on ebay. I'm shocked by the grade given. Look at front and reverse pictures before you view the third picture showing the full slab. Frankly, it's troubling to me as it is hardly isolated and not limited to one TPG. I know what I would grade this coin- what do y'all think?

Well, I can't argue with that grade because I have no idea how to grade an IHC. I'm a larger-denomination collector... But I do say, it's a nice looking coin.

I looked at the coin and immediately thought XF-45 possibly AU-50. AU-58 BN? No way. But someone who buys based on what it says on the label will buy it.

That is pitifully overgraded. The old cliche, buy the coin not the holder. I was having a similar conversation with some guys at my local LCS yesterday.

I actually think this coin is a VF. According to Rick Snow: "A VF coin will have a full headband (or ribbon) by LIBERTY, but the ribbon end with the diamond detail will be connected to the lower hair curl.
A basic XF coin will haver the lower hair curl clearly separated from the ribbon end.
This is very clearly defined and easy to understand. It is a wonder that so many grading services get it wrong!"Based on these criteria, the coin looks VF to me. I attached photos showing the weakness in "Liberty" and the headband, as well as worn hair details above the ear and a lack of separation of the headband and hair curls. For comparison, I include a picture showing appropriate details for an AU58. To be fair, if you look at the PCGS photograde images, they are not entirely consistent and this coin could be called an XF based on those images. To me, this is a VF all day long. Arrrrrgh :-(

wouldn't a weak strike cause the confusion here?

I have been upgrading my indian set, and I have to say that I agree that grading has been degraded(pun intended)lately. Sure, some of it could be due to weak strike, and if that is the case, I would expect a lot of cartwheel luster on that coin. I can't tell from the pics how much luster is visible, so I would just steer clear. NGC seems in general to be worse than PCGS on indians, especially earlier ones from the 60s and 70s. Personally, I would have given this coin a 40-45 given there is no luster as illustrated.

I have some in this condition and have never considered them higher than VF - but then I'm English!

I'm not much of an IH grader but I had this pegged at 45. I would think a weak strike contributed to some of it but don't know that it would account for the apparent wear of some of the finer details.
