Or, on the other hand, an items value is only determined what a person is willing to pay for it, so the coin pictured can be worth more...or less.

Epikur is right. Especially when you are talking about coins from the early mint. Condition is relative to each collector and many early coins were cleaned because it was not seen as detrimental at the time. Such a rare coin could go as high as $1500. It all depends on whether a collector sets his/her eye on it.
