I have seen Kennedy half dollars stored and displayed in Dansco albums.

Years ago, I had bad experiences with coins being stored in cardboard albums. The coins eventually became toned or discolored.

I am wondering if the newer albums, like Dansco albums, are a good way to store uncirculated and proof coins for years without discoloring them.

Please share your thoughts.

When you say cardboard albums do you mean folders and not albums? Albums are way safer then folders and Dansco is a very good and trusted brand name,IMHO.

Thanks for the reply.

I am asking if coins can be safely stored in Dansco albums. The ones made of cardboard with plastic strips to protect the embedded coins from dust, dirt, etc.

My concern with any coin album is that, because of the cardboard, coins can tone and tarnish easily. Maybe it might be safer to place coins in a BCW 2x2 flip?

Your thoughts?

Dansco albums are made with pH neutral cardboard and airflow is limited inside the pages, preventing almost all toning. If you are really concerned, you can buy a Dansco slipcover to completely envelop the album. Dansco albums are considered the top of the line in coin storage.

Wheatchaser is spot on here. I would say Dansco's are great. I love the protection they offer as well as the look

This is basically a Dansco web site. By that I mean most members use those although there are many, many different brands and most are similar for coin storage. Dansco, as well as any others is only as safe as the area you keep them in. I've been using Whitman Classic Albums for a long, long time. I've also got some Dansco and a few others. All get me the same results. If you ask a Chevy owner which is the best car, they usually will say Chevy. Same if you ask a Thomasvile Furniture owner which is the best furniture, you'll hear Tomasville, of course. Same with a Dansco person.
I like Whitman Albums for a multitude of reason. Most Dansco people rave about the appearance then hide them away.
As I said almost any Album is OK for coins. However, as a precaution, always place them in a Zip Lock Plastic bag to keep out as much moisture as possible.

Thanks. So all of you are saying that Dansco albums are good for storing coins.

I had always been told that albums are not good for long-term storage. Coin capsules are better. Of course, the problem with coin capsules is that they are expensive (compared to albums) and make it challenging to display your coins.

So Dansco (or whatever company) albums are good for long term coin storage?

I personally am not comfortable with coin albums, including Danscos. My coins get mounted in 2x2 and archival pages in binders. Just seems safer.
Rest in Peace

Partially true. Actually as long as air, humidity, etc. can get to your coins, they are not safe. Any metal will either stain, tone, tarnish, corrode, etc. as long as outside sources can get to them. Placing an Album in a Zip Lock bag, pushing out as much air as possible, will make for a much safer long term situation. The thing to remember is just how long a time are you attempting to save your coins for? I plan on checking my Albums every few hundred years for any possible problems.

Dansco albums are good. My oldest ones have been in use for almost 30 years. No problems, no complaints.

Remember that where you keep your albums (low humidity, stable temperature) is very important. Layered storage helps.

Just to echo the other comments, Dansco and most other quality albums are fine, just watch the temp, humidity, airflow, & pollution (dust, smoke, grease, mothballs, ect).

Absolutely, the attic, basement, and garage should be avoided.
