A robber smashed into a rare coin dealership in central Paris on Saturday, made off with two trays of gold pieces and then staged a shoot-out in a crowded metro station before being wounded and nabbed by police.

Coin dealer Claude Burgan said he had been opening his shop after lunch when he was shoved to the ground and hit in the head by a thief who pushed his way in.

Burgan, his head and shirt still wet with blood following the incident, told AFP he managed to lock the thief in the boutique.

"To escape he had to shoot at least twice into the glass window. He left with two trays of gold pieces worth about 100,000 euros", said Burgan, standing on shards of glass outside the boutique.

The thief then fled into the nearby Grands Boulevards metro station in a crowded, tourist-heavy area, where police officers noticed him and began their pursuit, leading to an exchange of fire.

"The criminal took out his gun in the train," said a witness who said he heard at least 20 shots during the exchange with police.

Police said the man was apprehended after being shot in the arm during the shoot-out. A spokesman said he was not in critical condition.

The suspect was already known to law enforcement for prior armed robberies, he said.

"Oh My" This is scary. Glad there were no innocent bystanders.

The situation could have been a little safer if the robber never had a gun.
I am just glad that I was never anywhere nearby, and could have been an innocent bystander.

Guns must shoot randomly themselves. People couldn't possibly be the problem.

If the shop owner was more alert and was legally able to open carry a pistol this event never would have occurred.

I do not agree with free guns laws for everybody. Better no guns

Course, the robber had no problem shooting at the police. So I wonder who would shoot first, a hardened, violent criminal--or the coin shop owner?

What an absolutely immature argument! The human behaviour fact is that just the presence of a firearm in a room actually raises stress levels and makes violence more likely. ( doesn't cause but acts as a catalyst) Second point is absolute rubbish any firearm would have been under counter and would have been useless. I am not taking a position on American gun laws I am taking a position on retarded arguments. Edit: obviously the writer of that silly argument has never seen a French coin shop if they had they would never have made such an stupid comment!!

Uh, this is what robbers do. They are not going to walk in and say "Can I please have your coins?"
If not a gun it would have been some kind of weapon.

I'd rather face a gun than an axe in the hands of a madman.
