I had a larger magnet that was also fairly strong. I wasn't able to notice any interaction when the bars were still in the hard plastic. My large magnet probably just wasn't strong enough.
Use an earth metal magnet... the best and cheapest ones I have found to be in the hard drives of old computers... used to help the needles read the hard drive.. there are 1 - 2 really strong magnets in there!! They are so strong if you put two of them together you need a tool to pry 'em apart!
I have several hard drive magnets laying around; good idea. I also have a giant magnet from the voice coil of a dead subwoofer in my garage somewhere. I'll give those a shot on my silver stash.
