I got stuck with this beauty from an online auction. Their photos didn't show the lines. Probably should have returned it, but felt I took the risk and should have known better. Obviously paid too much, but figured I'd have a little fun with it before I give it away on ebay.

It looks like some type of "machining", pretty close to "perfect" circles.

Rotated reverse are either more expensive, ignored or not wanted at all. A coin with 180 degree rotation is usually considered by some worth much more that no rotation at all. Such errors are either wanted by error collectors or not wanted for a collection. Many web sites just ignore that type of error.

Standard die orientation in the US is for the obv and rev dies to be rotated 180 degrees compared to each other. . In other words if you are looking at the obv and it is right side up the reverse will be upside down. (This is called coin orientation. If there is 0 degrees of rotation between obv and rev that is called medal orientation.) But it is possible for the dies to sometimes be put into the press so that they are not in the standard orientation. Or one or both of the dies may rotate during use so they are not in the standard position. Common usage is to "assume" the obv die has not moved and so the reverse is described as having rotated X number of degrees either clockwise or counterclockwise from the standard position.

I apologize for misleading anyone. Should have been more descriptive about the circular tooling marks on the reverse. Certainly didn't mean to mislead anyone. Not sure how these marks were made, but there is an indentation right in the middle and several concentric cut marks around the coin. Almost looks like it was a backing plate for something being cut.
