Ok, so it is a known fact that early lincolns, Indians and large cents in lustrous mint state condition command significant premiums in RED. I guess I understand that folks like to purchase classic coins that look as close as possible to the day it was minted.

Me, however, have always been a toning fan. When putting together my higher grade early Lincoln collection(especially in the teens and twentys), and my higher grade IHC collection, I really have no desire for a RED coin. I see PCGS MS66 red IHC such as this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1904-Indian...em2a3b3aa0f0
for thousands of dollars.....and this look does absolutely nothing for me. Now give me a nice brown IHC, with fiery red lustrous highlights around the peripheries of the devices, or lustrous brown with subtle blue iridescence...something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/1885-1c-NGC...em35d8167c53
or this http://www.ebay.com/itm/1907-indian...em1e8e387e7d
and I suddenly have a coin-gasm. They seem to be less expensive, due to the stereotype that (BN) is lower quality than (rd)....but BN coins with strong luster are WAY more attractive to me. What are some of your thoughts? I'm sure many will disagree, as the premium people pay for red is a reality.

It's a risky game buying RD cents, imho. They can turn so easily and you can lose thousands of dollars in an instant...

Many of my IHC's are in the middle, i.e., RB (red-brown).

I don't think the red coins are worth the premium, and unless they are slabbed
they could be enhanced so I don't go out of my way to purchase them.

I love me some colorful Indian Head cents! Would rather have an MS BN that is wonderfully colored than any full red cent. Red coins are risky as noted above.

Some of my favorites are BN coins that should be RB. And RB coins that are almost full RD.

I'm with you johnny, a red/brown or lustrous brown with or without color is a prize. Red ones in the high dollar dates are risky business to have sitting in a safe. nlp

"BN coins with strong luster are WAY more attractive to me." In 150% agreement. Love those toners.

I usually stay away from RD. RB and BN coins, in most cases, are much cheaper which means I have more money for other coins and it helps mitigate some of the risk of it changing color later on. An exception would be coins which only have a small premium in RD over RB.

I guess for those who can afford it and looking to build a top ranked registry set , one must go for RD coins when all the other sets have RD coins.

It is just me or do the lines in the wheat lose a lot of detail when they turn dark brown. The red ones have amazing detail in the wheat.

I agree on copper coins I prefer toning, I also may be one of the few people out there who really loves the dark brown/ almost black color on old copper. Am I the only one who sees something weird on that 1885? The zoomed out picture looks nothing like the closeup...

I have coins in R, Bn, and RB and I must say I prefer red or RB because you lose the contrast that shows all the detail in brown. Don't get me wrong I have some beautiful brown MS IHCs, but full red is the prize.

As a Lincoln collector, I like to see MS coins have some remaining red mint luster on them. They don't need to be full RD, but I do prefer RB coins over straight BN coins and am willing to pay the premium to get to that grade. I think a nicely toned RB coin can be as attractive or even more attractive than a straight RD coin sometimes.

I agree with KenKat. I like the Red and Red Brown coins, but will only get Brown cents when I have to.

I don't care for Red, and usually I find RD/BN coins unattractive. I find full even brown copper to be very attractive. And as a bonus they are cheaper!

Here is a nice "Brown" coin.

Classic-Indian-Cent-Or-Early-Copper-BN-Vs.-RD-Des-Discussion

This coin will rival any RB counterpart as far as eye appeal.

I had 3 RD Indians in my collection at one point. I am now down to zero.
