I've been saving all year to buy a 1916-D Mercury dime, a coin that I have wanted for almost 20 years. Basically I've just been setting aside a little loose changed when I can, or a few dollars that I don't particularly need at the time. Also, a lot of the money that I have made from selling a few coins on here has gone to the 16-D fund. Today I counted the money and I am at $461.75. I figure I need to be in the low $600s to get a decent certified, problem free piece. I have several more duplicate coins to sell, and between these and just a little more saving I should be there in time to get one for Christmas! This is the first time that I've ever spent so long saving for a single coin, and it's pretty exciting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I have always wanted a 1916 D dime, as well as a 1909 S VDB Cent.
It's been 50 years. I'm still waiting.

Hope you have coin shows near you. I've seen many 16D Mercury dimes in the $500 and up range and in slabs. Low grades naturally but getting harder to find them at all anymore. Must have something to do with the Mint no longer making them.

Nice! I know what you mean. I recently dropped $800 on an 1801 half dollar that I had been saving up for all year. I also sold some random coins here to raise some cash. Let us know when you finally get it!

If you want to pay in the low $600s range you're going to have to go after the AG market. Fortunately they appear pretty plentiful in those low grades. I also think low grade Mercs have great eye appeal vs other coin types.
Here's some history on Heritage closed auction prices.
Good-6 August 12, 2007 PCGS $1,265.00 August 12, 2007 PCGS $1,380.00
Good-4 July 11, 2007 ANACS $862.50 July 13, 2007 PCGS $1,035.00
I saw lots of problem free ANACS AG-3 examples going for the high 500 to low 600 $ range.

An AG-3 Merc is nothing but a problem coin, in my opinion. I don't own one, but I would be shooting for the G-6 example.

I don't remember which coin shop it was, but one of these two, the guy had two AG 1916 d mercs last summer when I was down there. They were raw, but he only wanted like $300 for them.

Well I thought about it and I would check "B" first. First display case as you walk in.

I'm not quite following what you mean.

I have probably seen more variation in 16-D dimes slabbed "AG-3" by TPG's than in any other coin in any series. The worst of these coins will have nearly no detail on the back, while the best have a nearly full rim and could easily pass as G-4 and are nice albeit well worn coin. I am looking for the latter example. The price differences in the AG-3 coins is usually quite small. Poorer examples usually go for the mid 500s to low 600s, while better examples seem to be in the 600s. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to save for a G-6. Maybe I'll get the AG-3 now, and then sell it in the future to upgrade sometime down the road....

Thundercoin, IMO a well-detailed AG-3 16-D can be a very attractive coin, more so than most coins with that degree of wear. You are correct in saying that there is variation in slabbed AG-3s. You are doing it right looking for a PQ example

I have seen quite a few AG3 coins on various auctions in the past month. Some do not look very bad. To pay 50% more for a G4 takes some consideration. I need one too, but have not started saving. Just window shopping. Good luck in the hunt and let us know how it turns out.
