I have both of those proof sets my self. One of the coins, in the 75 marked case is a type 1 and the 76 marked case has a type 2.

I was Not the one who bought them from the mint so, .

Not really since the business strike Type II Ikes began production in 1975. They didn't wait until the end of 1975 to switch over to the new hubs. All of the 1975 mint set dollars are Type I and the 76 sets are type II, but a type II business strike not in the set could have been made in either year.
Ouch, you are right.

I seem to remember cladking stating that in the past. One of these days, I will remember this.

so we really do not know if there were any 1976 coins printed that year,
for all we know all were made in 1975, then the die cracked or broke and a new one started up

I was going to but decided to with the TPG () route.

I got to handle a 1975 Daniel Carr half at the local coin club meeting several months ago which belonged to a die maker who happens to post here once a while.

Here's another wrinkle. Reading about the Bicentennial coins, the Mint didn't want to just idle between the end of 1974 and when the Bicentennial minting started. So they kept minting 1974's until February 1975. So presumably 20 million or so of the 1974's are also actually 1975's.

They've never been able to come up with final mintage figures for the 40% silver Bicentennials. They know how many they made, but they don't appear to know how many they melted down.
