Hello all, I have a question for the general community here. I own an 1863 not one cent indian head coin/token from the civil war. If I cast replicate this coin am I committing a crime? Is it legal to reproduce/counterfeit civil war tokens? Please excuse my ignorance. Thanks for any and all replies!

Have you ever tried casting something ? Seems like it would be hard to do. I have no idea if it would be legal since it wasn't really U.S. coinage.

It is illegal only if you try to sell them as genuine coins. If you err on the safe side, cast all of your replicas with a permanent (stamped or raised) marking of "COPY" as it is a technical requirement to make these coins legal to make. Read and acquaint yourself with the Hobby Protection Act to know all the specifics as to the legality of your enterprise.

Correct. The Hobby Protection Act requires "any imitation numismatic item" to be stamped. Civil war tokens qualify as "numismatic items".

Back in the 1960's, a company (possibly the Columbia Mint?) produced many cast copies of common Civil War tokens. Fortunately, they typically possess a granular surface, making them relatively easy to spot. In recent years, I've seen some questionable zinc CWT's; those being scarcer varieties. NGC has been refusing to slab them, it appears.
