Hello, I was just cleaning my basement, and I've found this Napoleon token placed in some kind of yellowish marble. I've had it since 1995, never identified.

It is indeed Napoleon the great.
But there are so many many medals, tokens, jetons, plaques, buttons, coins.... that it is almost impossible to find the exact origin.

Thanks for the reply!
How would you name this kind of "coin"?
It obv is not a real coin, but I don't know how to call it then. Token or something else?
I'll have to ask on some french forums.
My father got this from his friend historian who was working in a museum at the time.

It's a "medal", or perhaps a "medallion" or "plaque", depending on how big it is. Set into a piece of stone like that, it may have been part of a decoration on a piece of furniture, or part of a house.

+ It's cca 22mm in diameter.

Btw, what would you say about it, does it look ok or is it more like some cheap ornament?

I'm not really shure about materilas of the stone and medal, I'll try to ask some people around and reply tomorrow.

Correct Sap, seems to be a part of something
Could be part of a clock.
Marble was in fashion at that time.
Here is an example of Napoleon III

looks like a paperweight to me -
he type that you might find in a lot of museums in France.
The portrait is similar to the image you see on his coinage;
but the cipher "N" bears little similarity;
and usually, you wouldn't expect to see both on the same item.

Does it look ok to you?
Or it looks "cheap"? By some standards.
It's pretty heavy :)
