Hi

I inherited this medal from a Great Aunt and unfortunately didn't get any back-story. Medal and ribbons as picture. The scroll underneath the hunting horn at the top of the ribbon reads "Attendance". On the reverse of the medal itself are the following words:

No. 49 Newcastle Upon Tyne

Encampt.

Comp J J Coates

Jan-June 1922

The lid of the box reads "Gass & Co. 138 Regent Street, London"

Any information would be greatly appreciated

Gass & Co is probably the company who made it.
No 49 : number 49 of a numbered serie?
For the attendances of a gathering in Newcastle Upon Tyne?
Competitor JJ Coates? Is the name engraved?

Can you make a picture of the both sides of the medal please?

the two ribbons belong on British medals issued for service in WW1.
And pics, front & back, of the device at the top of the blue ribbon, please.
As a preliminary guess, I'm thinking that you might have a medal from a Masonic or similar fraternal lodge.

Hello and welcome.

The "KGH" monogram and the little horn on the clasp-badge indicate this is a medal or "jewel" from the "Knights of the Golden Horn", a fraternity affiliated with the Buffaloes rather than the Freemasons. "Encampt" is short for "Encampment", the name this particular Order gave to its branches (or "lodges"). "Comp" is short for "Companion", the lowest of six ranks within the Order. If my reading of their official website is correct, Encampment #49 Newcastle is no longer operational.

Since the RAOB are a male-only organization, I assume the GUOKGH are as well; your great-aunt would not have been a member herself, and probably didn't know much about how your great-uncle (or whoever the named individual was) acquired the medal.

Thank you everyone for your guidance, especially Sap; you have opened a huge number of doors in researching my family's history! It's in fact my mother's side of the family and she had no idea about this!

Unfortunately my camera doesn't stretch to clear pictures any closer up than what you can see
