Hey folks, I've been reading the forum for a while but haven't made many posts. I don't normally collect US coins by series, but I'm filling a Whitman Jefferson nickel album from circulation (1938-present). I'm 15 coins away from being finished - not including the proof coins. I don't expect I'll find the proof coins in circulation, but when I'm done finding all the business strikes, I plan to reward myself by buying all the proof coins to fill in the remaining holes in the album. I keep track of anything pre-1960 or unusual that I find. I've read nickelsearcher's stats on nickel searching and figured I'd post my statistics so far in case anyone is interested. In the first 10 boxes, my most interesting find was a couple days ago - a 1975S proof. I had been worried I might not notice a proof coin if I came across one in circulation. Well I was clearly wrong. It was the last coin of the roll with a mirror like background that made it obvious it was something different. A little banged up from its journey through circulation, but still unmistakably a proof coin. Second most interesting was a single roll with 2 Buffalo nickels with clear dates. My most annoying find was an entire box of 2014D nickels. Second most annoying was three rolls in a row, each with a penny in the very center. I hope it was an accident and not some jerk trying to try save 4 cents by substituting a penny for a nickel. After 20,000 coins, I'm still missing 15 to complete the set: 1938, 1938S, 1939D, 1939S 1942D, 1942P, 1942S, 1943D, 1944D, 1944S, 1945P 1950D, 1951S, 1953S, 1955 Anyway, here are my stats by category after going through 20,000 coins
Type Number Rate (1 per X nickels)
War Nickels 8 2500
1938-1959 (excluding silver) 195 103
Buffalos (with dates) 3 6667
Buffalos (without dates) 1 20000
Proofs 1 20000
2009 nickels 10 2000
Canadian Nickels 5 4000
Total of above 223 90
Others
U.S. Pennies :( 3 6667
unknown token 1 20000
I'll post updates periodically as I continue searching.

I did a box of nickels a few years ago and here are some stats:
6/4/11 1939 1 1940 2 1941D 1 1941S 1 1943D 1 1945D 1 1946 2 1946D 1 2009D 4
(others not listed)
There were two Canadians; 2005 and 2009.
Also, a one peso Mexican coin, dated 2004.
I'd like to think that with 20,000 nickels you wouldn't have as many holes.

Very interesting, davidtcc. I used to do similar surveys with 5p and 10p coins in the UK back in the 1980s when the old shillings were in circulation.
I hadn't realised how scarce the 2009 nickels were!

They are here, Rob. Mintage of nickels and dimes for that year were roughly 1/10th of normal. The economy was hurting (some will argue that it still is) and thus mintages were curtailed.

've hit nickels for a while (years), I've thrown everything back post 1940 except for war nicks. The post '40 are just so common.

Quote: I'd like to think that with 20,000 nickels you wouldn't have as many holes. Yeah, me too :) I was hoping to have filled more of the holes by now. Looking over my list of missing, I think 6 are silver and 6 have mintages below 10 million (the other three have mintages 10-20 million). So I'm not too surprised I haven't found them yet. My hope for the next 10 boxes is that I'll fill, on average, one hole per box. I think that's optimistic. I suspect I will actually find 2 or 3 of the higher mintage ones, 1 or 2 of the missing silvers, and 1 or 2 of the missing low mintage ones. In the mean time, I'll be looking to upgrade the ones I already have. A couple of them are in rather embarrassing condition.

I wish I could find 38 D, only 38 I can find is a bunch of 38 no mark. like 1 per box it seems. Got a box of all 2013=P last year and was not too happy about it because they were the plastic rolls, but surprisingly nobody questioned them when I spent them or cared they were that way.

I have been doing a whitman 38-present folder aswell, and surprisngly..I have some of the same holes as you! The 50D is the hardest to find. I did however find a BU 1939D with a awesome golden tone. Best one yet. Good luck man, keep us posted!

I normally do Pennies once in a while but I have done one box of nickels, it only yielded 1 War Silver and a couple Canadian. Not sure if that a good result or not.

Don't give up looking for circulated proofs. After just finishing my 100th box, I have found 29 proofs (or at least look like proofs to me.)

Searched 4 boxes, 2 War Nickels, a dateless buffalo, and a 87-S impaired proof

You need a 1938 and not a 38 D? That's actually good because the 38 is relatively easy.
I recently found a 38D, but I must have at least a dozen 1938 (plains).

Great stats ... sorry I missed your comments when they first appeared ... too much work and not enough free time. You appear based on my experience to be well on your way to a roll-found circulation strike set. Note that I am currently at 314,300 nickels searched and still need two coins to seal the deal ... it's great fun to search for them and hopefully you gain as much enjoyment from the hunt as I have over the years. Looking forward to any updates you provide ... stay true to the quest! David

I've been through another 20,000 nickels for a total of 40,000 searched. Still trying to fill a nickel album from circulation (1938-present). In the past 10 boxes, I filled 4 holes: 1938, 1942D, 1953S, and 1955. Not as many as I was hoping, but I am making progress. I'm now 11 coins away from being finished. I also upgraded a bunch of other coins. Most interesting find in this set of 20,000 was a Liberty nickel (1904). Even though it's pretty low grade, it's still amazing to find a 110 year old coin in circulation. Second most interesting was an AU 1948-D. Really nice condition to find in circulation. Found it in the second to last roll of a box that was otherwise pretty disappointing. After searching a total of 40,000 coins, I'm still missing 11 to complete the set: 1938S, 1939D, 1939S 1942P, 1942S, 1943D, 1944D, 1944S, 1945P 1950D, 1951S Here are my stats by category after going through 40,000 coins:
Type Number Rate (1 per X nickels)
War Nickels 11 3636
1938-1939 24 1667
1940-1949 (except War Nickels) 176 227
1950-1959 259 154
Buffalo (with dates) 3 13333
Buffalo (without dates) 1 40000
Liberty nickels 1 40000
TOTAL of Above 475 84
Others
Foreign* 15
2009 nickels 19
U.S. Pennies :( 3
Alladin's Castle token 1
* Panama(1), Canada(12), Switzerland(1), Bahamas(1)
