I recently purchased what I thought was a 1964 mint set from an individual at a coin show. The outside envelope looks exactly like others I have seen. However, the set has 6 coins per sleeve (instead of the normal 5)P&D; each has two dimes. The token is also different from what I have seen on the internet. Is this a true mint set or something someone pieced together? Any help/advice is appreciated! Thank you.

I'm interested in this one, surely looks nothing like the '64 mint sets I have.

Definitely not the normal set from the mints. The mint cello has red stripes on the Denver set and blue stripes on the edges of the Philly set. It looks like a homemade set using a real Gov. envelope or was there a souvenir set?

Wouldn't expect a homemade set in cellophane and a token though. The value isn't there to expect counterfeits either

This is intriguing. I've never seen any 1964 sets that look like that with that token and two dimes a set.
Looks pretty "official-looking" too, with all that envelope, cello and tokens. It would more likely be in a plastic holder that look similar to the ones used for the SMSs, if it was homemade.

Its interesting they came in a San Francisco package. They didn't start doing mint/proof sets in San Francisco until 1968. What are the mint marks on the dimes ?

Thank you all for your responses! It is quite odd; the set came with sheets of cardboard and the coins in each set have the proper mint mark. So I doubt a counterfeit-er would go to such lengths. Maybe the set has an earlier design scheme...? I'm not sure but thanks for the input.

*The dimes in the Denver sleeve both have "D" mint mark. The dimes in the Philly sleeve lack a mint mark.

Mgillette how can the envelope look correct when it says San Francisco, but these are P and D mint sets? I'm just curious. Thanks

This is an aftermarket, put together mint set. When the mint cut off mint set sales, the forerunners to today's tv marketers then made these things up and sold them through newspaper ads at inflated prices. This was in the era of the coin shortage and the end of circulating silver. Money was to be made and they were good at it.
Yours is not a mint issued mint set. The envelope may be original but the insides aren't.

Socal - Go on ebay and look at every other envelope on there. They were not sent from the mint, but the US Assay office.

All the '64 mint sets came in this envelope with the San Francisco return address.
