Hi all

Canadian guy new to collecting US coins and would love to put together a BU - ChoiceBU penny collection. Now with the Canadian penny no longer being made I need to get my "penny fix" elsewhere and I have always loved US coins.

Can anyone point me to a reliable seller that that is reasonable in price

Which series do you want to collect exactly? You can buy a BU set of the Memorial cents pretty cheap on ebay.

Yeah, what years/series? The U.S. Mint has pennies for it's entire history, so that's a wide range.

I'm assuming rmc's meaning Lincoln's, as BU of anything prior is almost never sold in a set and not that many even have a full set of them in BU (the cost and all). However, Lincoln's aren't without their uber-rarities in BU (the VDB cent comes to mind, plus the early 1910's).

My suggestion would be to start with the Shield/Bicentennial cents first and work your way through the Memorial cents, then back into the Wheaties. That way, you'll have a fairly complete set before you hit the early Lincoln brick wall.

Thanks for the replies guys

Yes I am referring to Lincoln's. I just picked up this set...http://www.ebay.com/itm/COMPLETE-19...OCOR:US:1123

May have over spent a little but love the fact that they are in capsules, I'm a cabinet maker and I think I will make some sort of a display. Plus the shipping cost was very reasonable to Canada.

So is this really a complete set or is it missing a few?

Thanks guys

Going off of what the listing says, you might be missing a few, but depends on what you consider "complete" 1. it says you get a 1960 d small date, but not the 1960 small date. 2. 1968 s. 3. 1970 s small/large date. But this is all up to you on whether you want all the varieties, but I would definitely say you need a 1968 s if its not included.

That's a pretty nice set, amazing selling them all in airtites. CONGRATS!

As pointed out, you'll need the 1960 small date and the 1970-S small date coins to "complete" the set. Also, easy to find, I consider the 1974 small/large date to be part of a "complete" Memorial set collection....this is a coin that seems to have been forgotten by collectors.

Im sure even though it does say complete set there will be a few varieties missing but it looks like a great start.

Now I have to figure out how to make a display. In Canada, we have a start and end but the States still make the penny so I will have to come up with something that allows for future years.

Varieties are a slippery slope, IMO.

First you collect the 7 '82 varieties because none of them are hard to find. Then you splurge on a '60 and '70-S small date. Then you need the '98-00 WAMs. Then the doubled ears. Then the '92 CAM. Then all 80+ varieties of '09 LP-2 doubled thumb.

I'd say that the basic date/MM combinations are a must, and the rest is just icing on the cake if you can find it at a good price. I'd personally go for a full set of proofs as well before I worried about spending $20+ on a single coin.

I hadn't heard of the 1974 sm/lg dates. Good to know!

Also, I've never seen the set sold in airtites before. Interesting strategy.
