Hello All, this is my first post, I tried searching for this type of error thru the forums but have not found anything....hope someone can help. I have a 1968 Washington quarter that looks like a top and a bottom put together without enough copper in the middle. There is an indent all the way around the coin and inside the indent you can actually see some of the normal edge marks on the copper, almost like the middle shrunk after striking. I dont have pics yet but has anyone ever heard of this?

Thanks

Dale

Hello and welcome to the forum! As you may know a picture is worth 1000 words and that applies to your case. The best guess is that the copper has been chemically removed. Copper is more reactive than nickel so some chemicals will react with copper much quicker than the nickel. A short soak will begin to remove the copper core from the edge and leave the nickel relatively untouched. Obviously, a much longer soak can begin to dissolve the whole coin. A science project coin is the best I can guess unless you come up with some pics, although imaging the edge of a coin can be difficult.

correct on the difficulty of the pictures, here are some that might give you a better idea, interesting part is that the ridge lines can still be seen on the copper part. Sorry about these pics, my daughter-in-law is going to bring her fancy dancy camera over this afternoon.

Far from being knowledgeable on coins, if it was a jewelery piece would it retain the little edge lines that normally go around a coin? It appears that the copper center has these. I am going to try to get a more detailed pic

the inside of the rim was removed to put the keeper in the groove so it would stay put. that is only my opinion though and I could be wrong. I have seen it before but don't know that much about them . Chuck mentioned one today that Chris put on the forum and the answer sounded reasonable to me so I will go with it till someone proves it wrong

This is actually and older version of the "cheat the payphone scam"...It really is, I have several around here, A fine wire was attatched around thet groove , done to a certain length. The quarter would be dropped into the phone until it was activated and the person stealing the phone service would just pull the quarter back up thruough the slot.

Before the days of cell phones, drug dealers in particular were fond of these coins as they did a lot of business on payphones.

Have Fun,
Bill.

Dale,
May I suggest something to you? When you take a picture like that while you are holding the coin you could set your camera to MACRO setting. Turn off the flash and you will get a much sharper picture, with the flash it washes out the picture. But what you have is like what is told to you a old coin trick from back in the day, some people would do this in an arcade room. Hope you take my advice about the close up pictures next time you take a picture like that.

Thank you,

300 coin guy
