Does anyone have a proof set flat pack with the date written in pencil on the envelope? Just received this (well, was supposed to be this) 1957 sealed flat pack proof set I won from coinsbybobby. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PROOF-SETS-...t_1414wt_900...BUT the one I received has the date written by hand on the envelope. The envelope looks a bit too new but also seems correct with the address printing. Serifs on the letters, accentuated serifs on the "3." I messaged coinsbybobby about my concerns and they said that all major sellers use stock photos, and that the 1957s were issued two ways and that this is one of the ways. They insist it's FACTORY! They gladly offered to refund and pay return shipping, but could only replace it with a similar set because that's the only kind they currently have. Thoughts? I'm just starting to collect some sealed sets and have not seen this type before. Coinsbybobby is a premier seller and supposedly sells a gazillion proof sets. I'd think he'd mention stock photos in his listing somewhere, but he doesn't...maybe he should. Edited by edweather 08/01/2014 5:41 pm

I'm at work at the moment, but I'll check mine when I get home this evening. It seems a though I have one or two with the date written on them (not necessarily 1957).

Yes, they WERE shipped in bulk boxes when multiple sets were ordered, but the envelopes themselves WERE marked. Obviously I have not seen every set they produced, but I can say I have never seen one without the date marked. Here is mine from 57...

I appreciate the replies. The envelope IS a Treasury Department envelope. Not sure where unused quantities of those would be obtained, but my concern is that a 1957 proof set from another 'opened' envelope was put into this envelope.

Well I do have a couple of proof sets without the date on the envelope, both 1957.

Dave thanks. Just looking at ebay, and quickly found this. Same envelope as ours. Looks like 57s also came in blank envelopes. Thanks again. Ed http://www.ebay.com/itm/1956-United...em1c43b30e48Looks like we have the RARE undated envelopes They definitely aren't that common. Have also seen an oversized envelope version with corrugated cardboard inserts. So 3 different types so far.

One of my 58's has the date added with what looks like a rubber stamp. Not sure if the mint did this or whomever purchased it .

Hi, I have 100 of these sets from 1957. I haven't checked them all, but of the dozen or so I just checked they all have the date printed. However, there are 2 font sizes, the majority of them being like the one posted, and a noticeably larger and darker font. I will post pics tomorrow (my camera batteries just went dead while trying to take a pic). So we know there are at least 2 types, so it would not surprise me if one without the date printed may exist. I will check through more of my sets tomorrow.

If it really is sealed and you decide to open it, how cool if you found one of these! If the undated proof set envelopes are from early runs, you just might!

Well, there ya go. Evidently there were some of them that did not get dated. Learn something new every day. Quote: my concern is that a 1957 proof set from another 'opened' envelope was put into this envelope. Why is this a concern? The odds that the actual mint set that was shipped in any given envelope is still the one that is actually in there is kind of low. As long as the set is legit, you are OK. I am looking for a 1956 envelope for my set for instance. I purchased it with no packaging. As long as I get a real 56 envelope, it matters little.

I think the OP is concerned that he may have paid a premium for an unopened set with the long shot hope of finding a CAM coin(s).
