Ikes - 1971S, 1972S, 1973S, 1974S (these are brown and blue ikes)
And a special set from 1976S

Halfs - 1964 and earlier were all 90% silver. 1965-1970 were all 40% silver

What are brown and blue ikes?

Will all of these coins look silver from the side?

Are only the proofs silver (s mint marks)?

only the proof Ike's are silver

the blue and brown ikes are nicknames given to them because of their packaging
Silver-Years

for halfs....no you can't always tell from the side.. if you are gonna look thru some full boxes it's best to play it safe and check the dates. after awhile you can start to easily pick out the silver ones because of the whitish color. However one could be toned or dirty and you might miss it. I also check mint marks as well because all "S" marks are proofs and can carry a small premium as well.

Too much bad information in this thread.

Silver Ike dollars
All 1971-S and 1972-S, both MS and Proof
All MS 1973-S and 1974-S
All MS 1976-S Type I dollars

Some Proof 1973-S, 1974-S, and 1976-S Type I dollars.

Put a piece of tissue paper over them. If they appear white through the paper they are silver, if they look dull gray they are coppernickel clad.

Silver half dollars

All 1964 are 90% silver

All 1965 - 1970 halves are 40% silver, all mints.

All MS 1976-S are 40% silver

Some Proof 1976-S halves are 40% silver, use the tissue test.

Some 1992-S to 2007-S proof halves are 90% silver. Use tissue test.

There are a few mint error pieces as well from the Denver mint from 1974 and 1977 but they are outside the realm of this discussion.

Does the tissue test still work if the coins are dirty?
