were are the florin experts ..... I am looking at purchasing this 1909 trial lead florin what are your thoughts on this trial and has anyone seen a coin like it this is a little about it Unique: this florin lead trial circa 1909 was on of a number of coinage designs for the Australia's newly formed commonwealth. From this lead trial presented to the commonwealth of treasury department for approval. The design was rejected in 1909.

David Gee manufactured a 1909 florin reverse die from an electrotype. There were a number of lead trials of square pennies and halfpennies that appeared the same time as some of the Gee forgeries (including some 1909 florins) around 15 years ago. These apparently were all from the same source. It is quite likely that your lead trial also comes from this source.

The Gee forgeries and the known pattern it was copied from (as seen in this old thread) both show a map of Australia with the rivers and the word "Australia" on it. This shows a map of Australia with a kangaroo on it, and the word "Australia" beneath. If it is a genuine trial piece from London, then it is from a die that was never used to strike even a pattern coin.

It is intriguing to say the least. It looks like it was struck by a die. It looks like the die used has high standards. It also has a date known to be a year when trial strikes were carried out. Had it been undated then it could have been for another purpose (a WW1 medallion to rally the war effort for example). So if it is fake then someone went to a lot of effort and expense to make it. They would need a deep pocketed sap (or Shanew) to buy it and they would need to have a really convincing fake trial piece to pull it off. Is there any design elements (letter fonts for example) that match other coins from the period 1890-1910? The Royal Mint would use existing letter punches as a cost saving method. Has the seller got any paperwork or provenance for the piece? I'm leaning towards it being genuine. Keep us updated.

I've found the website shanew took the pictures from. You can see a more zoomed-in picture there. It's ex Albert M. le Souef collection. Le Souef was Deputy Director of the Melbourne branch mint at the time the 1909 coinage was being worked on, and a passionate early collector of numismatic oddities. That's about as absolutely definitive a provenance of authenticity as one needs.

Seeing some of the gems and fascinating numismatic oddities that Shanew has posted I guess this piece fits in well with him being the latter day equivalent of Le Souef.
