Looks to me like it was struck through some debris of some kind. Opinions? Sorry for the poor quality of the close up, but I just got a new toy and cant seem to get what I want out of it.

That is post-strike damage. Firstly, the coin's shape is distorted; it is flattened out very slightly at K7. In addition, there is damage opposite the area in question. Also, deep struck through areas will not show any underlying detail, especially detail still beimg this sharp.

Interesting how STAT was damaged but EPL remains untouched.

PMD. There should be no evidence of details in a struck through area as deep as this.
