It looks genuine to me looking at the reverse, but I can't really tell from the obverse. An expert will be able to tell you more.

Yep, thats a clip. Notice how the D and W near the clip on the obverse flow into the clip. This is because the metal is being pushed outward in the absence of metal where the clip is.
