Has anybody seen a 1954 boxed proof set without the little pull tab notched into the wrapping paper on the bottom? Most that I've seen HAVE the pull tab.

WITHOUT pull tab.

Most sets I've seen look like this one WITH the pull tab.

I'd bet $$$ they aren't originally sealed. Probably steamed off the tape many years ago to check for cameo half dollars, then re-taped them. Can't be sure, but that is the attitude I take with any proof set or mint set I come across that is supposedly "sealed", most flat proof sets, never had their envelopes sealed anyways, as they came from the mint in a packaged bundle.

If anything the pull tab one looks more like a possible real deal, but one can reuse the tape and some adhesive to reseal them exactly the same as when they left the mint.

That's disappointing to hear about all the unsealing and resealing. I didn't know that all the flat packs were originally unsealed. I recently bought a few sealed proof sets from '57-'64. Got them a small premium, so I'm not out too much. Just bought this 1955 box set. Not sure if it has ever been opened, but the tape looks pretty good, and I like the fact the ink crosses from the tape to the box. Will definitely keep what you said in mind as I look for earlier year proof sets in boxes...will probably be best to actually see the coins I'm buying and not be so concerned about "sealed" boxes.
