Say you go into a bank, and ask the teller " hey just wondering if you had any half dollars "

She says yes, and pulls out, say 3-5, and just before you exchange your cash for them, you see they are not silver, or anything you want. Do you continue with the transaction, and just trade them in or spend them elsewhere? Do you back out of the trade? Just something I've been wondering, I've been to a bank before and the teller only had 1, before I even exchanged, I could see it was a random one. I really want to just say " Oh actually I'm okay, thanks" But I just buy it anyways.

I would buy them anyway, especially if you plan to go back there again. Otherwise, if they think you may be cherry picking coins, they will remember you for sure, and not in a good way. Besides, you can always just spend them.

I would make the transaction. It would look weird any other way.

I think the rule goes something like this: "Buy and large dollar and half dollar coins they have."

They will always spend so long as the Mint recognizes them as money. The last half dollar I got was alone in the tray, but I still took it and was nothing but a 1972. They told me it wasn't old or silver, and I told them I don't just need the old ones, it is the fun of searching and sorting them as much as finding the ones I need.

My customers always buy them, although I'm waiting for the day when a coin collector sees my 6 clad Halves and just walks away. Luckily I will know why ;D haha. I'm glad you brought this up!

When I pick up my boxes I just take them and pay, exchange them at the bank across the parking lot if I have to. It gives the tellers one less thing to worry about, they appreciate it. and you can go back there and order as many boxes as you like in the future.

Happened to me yesterday, cashier had 3 new looking golden dollars in his tray, as he pulled them out, I could see that they were well circulated. I took them anyway and now they are in the cash register at Wegman's. Presidential dollars buy a gallon of milk just as well as three paper bills.

If I'm in the States I take any half dollars I can get from banks - there are still several circulating clad dates / mintmarks I haven't got, and I enjoy spending the duplicates!

Yes, buy the halves, and then spend them somewhere if they're not keepers.

Who knows, you might be scoring a 1987 or another NIFC in the process.

Yes, complete the transaction and spend them later. It is part of the hunt, taking the bad with the good.

If it's just a few, I go ahead with the transaction.

Once I asked the teller for "any half dollars" and she said that she had $425 in the vault that somebody just brought in. Clearly that was a dump, so I politely declined--no sense in wasting time to verify what I already know.
